Matt Ryan Retires from NFL

Former Falcons Quarterback Signs One-Day Contract to Retire in Atlanta

March 15, 2023

**Indianapolis, IN -** Former NFL quarterback Matt Ryan has officially announced his retirement from the league. The 38-year-old made it official on Monday, March 15, 2023, by signing a one-day contract with the Atlanta Falcons, the team he spent the majority of his career with.

Ryan's retirement comes after a 14-year career in the NFL, during which he became one of the most successful quarterbacks in league history. He ranks seventh all-time in passing yards (62,792) and ninth in passing touchdowns (381). Ryan spent the first 14 seasons of his career with the Falcons, leading them to the Super Bowl in 2016, where they lost to the New England Patriots.

After spending his first 14 seasons with the Falcons, Ryan was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 2022. However, he struggled to find his footing in Indianapolis, starting just 12 games and throwing for only 3,841 yards and 20 touchdowns. Ryan was released by the Colts in March 2023, clearing $172 million of cap space for the team.

Prior to his release by the Colts, Ryan converted $12 million of his 2022 compensation into a signing bonus, clearing $6 million of cap space. While he still hoped to play, Ryan eventually decided to retire and join CBS as an announcer for the 2023 NFL season.

Ryan's retirement is a significant moment in NFL history. He was one of the most successful quarterbacks of his generation and helped lead the Falcons to their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Ryan's legacy will undoubtedly be debated for years to come, but there is no doubt that he is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
