Loons Capture First Away Win at Sporting Kansas City in Eight Years
A Long Awaited Victory
On Saturday night, Minnesota United FC earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Children's Mercy Park against Sporting Kansas City, marking the team's first away win at Kansas City since 2015.
Robin Lod scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute, securing the three points for the Loons.
A Back-And-Forth Affair
The match was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams creating scoring chances throughout the 90 minutes.
Sporting Kansas City took the lead in the 38th minute, when Johnny Russell scored from the penalty spot. Minnesota equalized in the 65th minute, when Franco Fragapane converted a penalty kick of his own.
The game remained tied until Lod's late winner.
Breaking the Curse
The victory was Minnesota's first away win at Kansas City since May 10, 2015, when the team won 2-1.
The Loons had been winless in their last seven away matches against Sporting KC, with their last win at Children's Mercy Park coming in 2013.
Moving Up the Standings
With the win, Minnesota moved up to seventh place in the Western Conference, with 25 points from 18 matches.
The Loons are now just two points behind sixth-place Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and three points behind fifth-place FC Dallas.

Minnesota United FC will return to action on Wednesday, July 12, when they host the Seattle Sounders at Allianz Field.
The Loons will then travel to face the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, July 15.
